It Gets Better

with 6 comments

It’s been a long time since I posted, but sometimes something in the media draws you in and compels you to comment.  This is one of those times for me.   I am posting with a message of hope.  There’s been some disturbing news about young people lately and as a role model I want you to know that it gets better.

A lot of celebrities have been reaching out to gay youth to let them know that their better days are ahead.   I don’t think there’s anything that I can say that Tim Gunn, Kathy Griffin, or Sarah Silverman haven’t said.  Instead I want to talk to those teens and young adults who have felt it necessary to attack their classmates.  Right now you’re in a lot of trouble at school probably and people are publicly scorning you because you’ve attacked somebody just because they’re different from you, but I want you to know–it gets better.

About 11% Americans identify themselves as belonging to the tea party.  That’s about 1 out of 9.  Even if you’re in a really liberal state like Massachusetts or California, there are probably a bunch of tea party members living right by you.  The point is, you’re not alone.   Join the Young Republicans or go to a tea party.  You can find friends at the National Organization for Marriage website.   You’ll be surprised how much support you’ll find.   It does get better.

As a teen when you haze, or punch, or name call the liberal school system will try to punish you for your intolerance.  As an adult when you work to prevent gay people from getting married, joining the military, or otherwise enjoy the rights of the rest of the population, you’ll be praised for your family values.  Better huh?  Calling a gay kid a fag may get you a detention in school, but David Barton is considered a man of God for pushing that homosexuality be regulated by the government as an unsafe practice.

So hang in there.  Don’t get desperate.  It’ll get easier.  Start cleaning up your image and maybe you can run for congress and then really have some fun.   The future’s ahead of you and it’s great.
