European Allies Want McCain

with 2 comments

I found this interesting.  People want you to believe that all of the rest of the world is pulling for Barack Obama as President.  However, when Obama is in Berlin July 24th he was hoping to speak at Brandenburg Gate where both Kennedy and Reagan gave historic speeches, but the Merkel government has reacted cooly to the idea.

According to German newspaper Der Spiegel, “The  respected Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper reported this week that a member of the Bush delegation approached Merkel’s foreign policy advisor, Christoph Heusgen, at the G-8 summit in Japan to discuss misgivings about Obama’s planned speech. The government is also acting out of respect for Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who has long enjoyed strong ties to Germany and good personal relationships with a number of high-level government officials in Berlin.”

I think that clearly shows what side the Germans are on.  If they’re supporting the Bush/McCain team on this speech you have to wonder who would have a better relationship with the Germans in the coming four years.  This is particularly astounding because McCain being a veteran of the armed forces may have taken part in World War II though I am unsure if he missed the age cut off or not.

  1. don’t assume. look things up. john mccain was born in 1936. that would have made him 9 years old when the end of major military operations happened in both europe and the pacific theatres. so, no, he sure didn’t participate in WW II.

  2. It’s not that the German government is on the side of McCain (or on the side of Obama), it’s that they (Merkel and a few others) are against using such a hugely historical monument for any speech that is used for political gain.
Having lived in Germany for the past year, I must say that most citizens are very pro-Obama. They are wrapped up in the hype just like most of America.
