Russia’s Drilling Less than 10 Miles from Alaska

with 14 comments

The recent story of China drilling for oil less than 12 miles from the Florida coast may have been discredited, but I have learned that as early as January of 2001, the Russian company Sibneft began setting up operations for oil drilling in the region of Chukotka is less than 5 km from Alaska.  I believe that translates to about 10 miles.

As Americans concerned about our oil independence we must demand that the American government also begin exploring the Chukotka region for oil.  Chukotka is closer to major cities in Alaska than it is to Russia and it quite possibly contains not only oil, but gas, gold, and diamonds.    We must balance our efforts to conserve oil with increasing supply by drilling in places like Chukotka.

  1. actually, 5km = 3mi.

chukotka is the northeastern part of russia, across the bering strait. the bering strait is approximately 58 miles wide. the closest point between russia and alaska is about 2.5 miles, between big diomede island (russia) and little diomede island (alaska), just south of the bering strait.

chukotka is huge. it is about 1/2 the size of alaska. you haven’t mentioned where in chukotka (or offshore chukotka) sibneft is drilling. i’m guessing that’s because you haven’t got a clue about where this is happening. what’s your info source? maybe it talks speficially about where this is going on. the article i read mentioned exploring offshore, but didn’t give details.

additionally, i’m pretty sure that russia won’t let the US drill on russian sovereign soil. unless you think we should pull out of iraq and invade siberia.

  2. It is still not right for them to be drilling that close to us when we’re not drilling.

  3. why?

    July 17, 2008 at 8:45 am

  6. If they are drilling and we are not, Americans look lazy and unambitious.

  7. that’s absurd. america is far from a lazy country. except for all the fat people. and the bloggers that can’t be bothered to look up facts.

  8. You know, I’m getting really tired of your attitude about my daughter. You don’t even know her, but you can’t resist those little digs.

  9. hey, you said it, not me. if you don’t want to be ragged on, don’t talk crap about your own daughter on your blog.

  10. and, actually, i wasn’t referring to your daughter here. i was referring to all the fat people in this country that shove 1/3lb hamburgers into their gaping mouths and chase them with 64oz jugs of cola. mmmmmmmm…artery hardening goodness!!!!!!!

i WAS, however, referring to you regarding bloggers that are too lazy to fact-check their entries. your accuracy would be a decent batting percentage, but not much more than that.

  12. What utter, uncorroborated, hypothetically ballyhooed nonsense. I live and work in Alaska and have travelled to the Chukotka region at least 10 times and this is the dumbest, most poorly researched claptrap about the oil industry I have seen in decades.
Get your facts out where we can see them, whoever is writing these fabrications, because the truth speaks for itself.
