McCain Calls for Bringing the Surge to America

A large component of McCains plan would be arming local youths and gang members like this one to take on criminals themselves.

A large component of McCain's plan would be arming local youths and gang members like this one to take on criminals themselves.

This week at the Urban League, John McCain justifiably touted the surge at bringing peace to Iraq.   He called for a similiar tactic to be used to fight crime in the United States.  According to McCain, “some of those tactics – you mention the war in Iraq – are like that we use in the military. You go into neighborhoods, you clamp down, you provide a secure environment for the people that live there, and you make sure that the known criminals are kept under control. And you provide them with a stable environment and then they cooperate with law enforcement.”

The plan as I understand it would be for the army, marines, and national guard to send troops into targeted inner-city neighborhoods where they could instill law and order.  Once there they would seek out those gang leaders and neighborhood youths that wish to cooperate with the surge and pay them and arm them so that they could go after the criminals.  This would help keep our soldiers from getting shot at while at the same time give each neighborhood the pride of cleaning up its own crime problem.

This is obviously a program that can’t really be used until the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran are over, but this would be an excellent program to get the most use out of our armed forces at peace time.  I am sure Obama would have advice for fighting the crime problem like “Be sure to lock your doors”.  That’s why for leadership McCain is the way to go.
