Father at End of Rope Needs Advice

with 11 comments

I am usually the one who supplies the answers, but I have to admit I am totally clueless.  I just found out that Emily did indeed want to be Barack Obama for the mock election.  I’m left to wonder where I went wrong.  Obviously, I blame my ex-wife, but even she isn’t crazy enough to support Obama.  At this point I almost wish it was just pot or something except that at 125 pounds she really can’t afford the munchies.

We had the talk already about the birds and the bees and how birds fly free while bees live in an opressive socialist state.  From an early age, I explained what to say when somebody confronted her with a liberal policy position.  I just worry that this is a gateway election and before long she’ll be supporting other Democrat candidates.  I always thought our conservatism was something we could share together even into her adulthood.

I can’t even look that the Palins anymore.  I see Bristol, Tray, Track, Trog, and Zeppo and I think that was what are family was supposed to be like.  Part of me just wants to cut off child support for her.  Maybe my handouts are leading her to expect government handouts.  I’d like some advice on how I can help her regain her Republican values or at the very least punish her before she becomes old enough to vote and its too late.

  1. maybe just love her anyway…if your way is the right way she’ll emulate you over time. If not you’ll show her you love her enough to disagree…thanks for an honest post.BUT leave her child support alone…that’s a responsibilty not to mess with

  2. Well, you could settle a ton of money on her, get her a yacht or so and maybe send her to a conservative, but very expensive private school where she can be among a peer group that looks down most people. That can bring out the Republican in a person, although it’s not a guarantee by any means.

  3. Thanks to both of you:

bchboy1 – There’s a lot of wisdom in what you say. After all, she can’t actually vote for 6 more years. I can pretend to be supportive of her finding her own path until then and that may help me to get on good footing so I can manipulate her over to my side.

Zenyenta – That’s a bit drastic, but it would definitely help. You should see her friends. They don’t look down on anybody.

  4. Nate, let the Obama thing go. Your sister reminds me that when you were in high school you had a brief moment of Dukakis-mania. It’s an age thing. It’s a lot more important that you worry about Emily’s looks. If you think she weighs 125, you are looking at the situation with rose-colored blinders on. Get her on a good diet and she’ll come around. Remember, Democratic women tend to be heftier. She probably doesn’t feel good enough about herself to be a Republican right now.

  5. My Dukakis mania was limited to me saying that I wanted to drive a tank like him. That was all. I know she weighs 125. That’s the first thing I have her do when she visits and she’s barely 5’6″.

  6. Not once did I advocate “pretending to support” or “manipulate” your daughter! i said to love and support her despite your differences…oh by the way,a kid can sense manipulation a mile away. The lesson here is attraction, rather than promotion.

  7. bchboy is exactly right. Emily needs to be attracted to the right side. That means, she must be attractive to Republican boys. That’s not going to help without lipo and a good dermatologist.

  8. Hmm, maybe that is the answer. If I could find a Republican boy to act interested in her, she would probably want to impress him.

  9. Too bad the McCain/Palin boys are too old for her.

  10. Hi, Nate! I was traveling, went to Argentina. You should go there sometimes, but I guess that right now you only have eyes for Venezuela and Bolivia here in South America, because of their communist leaders and all.
I know you can’t read Portuguese, but take a look at the end of this post:
It’s the cover of a Brazilian right-wing magazine, and there’s absolutely no irony or sarcasm attached. This magazine (number 1 in Brazil) actually believes that the US is not responsible for the economic crisis AND that its 700 billion package saved the world. So all I can say is: gee, thanks!
About your daughter, it’s touching to see how much you care about her. Republicans make such good parents!

  11. USA! USA!

Thanks for the kind words about Emily.
