The Palins and the Von Trapps

Back when musical theatre was a heterosexual endeavor, Rogers and Hammerstein penned some of the greatest songs of the 20th Century.  Its not unusual for me to be taking a shower and suddenly start belting out “My Boy Bill”, “OKlahoma”, or “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair.”  They wrote songs that made one feel proud to be an American.

One of their best musicals was The Sound of Music about a family of musicians who begin performing together and their thrilling escape from Nazi Germany in the most adorable matching costumes.  I believe that the closest thing we have in this country to the Von Trapps from Sound of Music is Sarah Palin and her family.

Not only has Todd Palin been trying to secede from this country much like the father in Sound of Music was trying to escape from Germany, but Sarah Palin has the kind of wardrobe that Julie Andrews had at the height of her popularity.

Now comes word out of Alaska that the Palin children have already been conducting state business. “There’s an expectation that the First Family participates in community activities,” said Sharon Leighow, the governor’s spokeswoman. “They are representing the First Family and the state of Alaska.”

In all, the state paid for 64 one-way and 12 round-trip commercial flights for her daughters Bristol, 17, Willow, 14, and 7-year-old Piper. In some cases, Palin also charged the state for the girls’ hotel rooms. Their official functions included posing for “First Family pictures” and attending MTV’s Total Request Live.

With the younger Palin’s already getting into the family business, the future looks really good for Alaska and if they choose to stay as part of our country, The United States as well.

  1. It’s such a shame the way the gays claimed musicals for their own, making it so normal people can’t properly enjoy them anymore.

  3. Yes, I almost was afraid to admit my affinity for singing show tunes in the shower for fear it would be misconstrued.

  6. You should really hope that the First Family chooses to remain part of the U.S., because I already told you what would happen if the US didn’t include Alaska: Brazil would become the fourth largest country in size in the world, surpassing the US. That would be a major blow to your ego. I mean, Brazil already dominates world soccer…
Nate, have you given some thought to where in Brazil you’d like to live after November 4? Are you planning to leave the US right away after Obama wins or you’re going to savor your last few weeks with Bush before moving?
And God, I love musicals. That’s one things you Americans do better than us.

  8. I wouldn’t give up on McCain just yet. The polls show that now that the number of evangelical Christians has doubled in the past 4 years, McCain is dominating real America.
