Boy 8, Dies Shooting Uzi

with 9 comments

I had to think long and hard about whether I would post this or not because I did not want to sensationalize a child’s death.  However, I was saddened to hear about the senseless loss of life and I thought something must be said.  An 8-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun under adult supervision at a gun fair.  The boy lost control of the weapon while firing it Sunday at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield, Massachusetts Sportsman’s Club, Police Lt. Lawrence Valliere said.

This was the boy’s first time firing an uzi.  This should never have happenned.  When are the schools going to start dealing with gun safety.  If he had begun with small caliber handguns in first grade when he should have, by the time he would have been fully experienced in firing submachine guns by the time he was 8.

Unfortunately, the boy lived in Massachusetts where liberals refuse to fund and legislate an adequate fire arms training curriculum in the public schools.  How many more senseless accidents will there be before politicians get serious about this?  If our children do not have firearm training, how are they supposed to defend themselves against predators who outweigh them by 100 or 150 pounds?  Let’s get serious about education and stop leaving children behind from gun safety.

  1. What sort of a nation is this if an 8 yr old doesn’t know how to properly handle a firearm??? Shame on us all. How about no child left behind in weapons expertise.

  3. i just wanted to add, for everyone concerned about this tragedy, that our candidate’s fine record speaks for itself:

John McCain – Opposes restrictions on so-called “assault rifles” and voted consistently
    against such bans.

John McCain – Voted YES on loosening license & background checks at gun shows.

  5. You know, tragedies like this one really make you Americans look bad.
We had a plebiscite here in Brazil a couple of years ago. Guns here are not a “constitutional right” as they are in the US, and it’s not common for people to have guns at home here. The plebiscite was to decide if the country would adopt a stricter gun control policy, almost a ban, in many cases. In the beginning of the campaign, polls showed that the position in favor of the ban would win easily, but this was reverted by a strong right-wing campaign preaching against “control of the state” and such. Guess who sponsored most of this campaign? Gun lobbyists from the US.
It’s really great how you insist on spreading freedom to the rest of the world. I can only call this altruism.

  7. i am just glowing with pride after reading your testimonial, lola! maybe if we succeed in exporting our constitutional values to more of our little brown brothers and sisters to the south, they won’t feel the need to sneak across our border in search of freedom!

  9. […] is hot on the heels of the case of another 8 year old boy from Massachusetts who shot himself in the head while firing an uzi.  Now, from everything we have heard this Arizona boy was well adjusted and […]
