Bo Knows Obama’s Puppy Choice Says A Lot

with 10 comments

Despite only being in office for 10 weeks, President Obama never disappoints in his ability to disappoint.  The Obama’s family choice of  dog is no different.   They could have picked a good old American dog, perhaps a dalmatian in recognition of their years of service to the nation’s fire departments.  Instead they went with a foreigner–a Portuguese Water Hound.  One thing I noticed right away is that the dog has no eyes.  It seems incredibly cruel to me to give the girls a blind dog, but whatever.

Bo, the new “First Dog, ” got his start at the home of Art and Martha Stern, a couple from Boyd, Texas. The Sterns have bred Portuguese Water Dogs since 1997.  Is there a more elitist way to pick up a dog?   When I got Emily’s puppy, I picked it up as a private home as well.   The woman took me around and showed me the 50 or so dogs she had in cages and though a few of them had passed away by the time I got there, I had plenty to pick from.   She was a sickly dog, but extremely loyal.   After a couple of years we decided she had earned her freedom and set her loose in the forest preserve.  It was a tearful goodbye for a great dog.  I would have felt much better about the Obama dog if they had done it that way.  The puppy mills in this country are hurting and this would have been a great chance to set an example.

  1. But what a adorable pup! I think he’ll do fine. He’s a citizen and was born in the United States and I believe he can document that. Unless you’re not prepared to accept his papers as genuine?

  2. If he was born in Texas, how can we be sure his parents were here legally?

  3. I heard the owners moved from Washington DC to Texas recently… they used to work for the government, that makes them suspicious to me right there. They are probably forged papers.

I am sure though the Senate will work to get him confirmed if they don’t filibuster him…lol

  4. Very disappointed that President Obama did not keep his word that the family would be adopting. People who volunteer for rescue groups and work in shelters had hoped that that he would lead by example. There are thousands of homeless dogs in shelters and pure breed rescue groups that would have fit his family’s needs. SEE http://WWW.PETFINDER.COM It is unfortunate that another breeder made money on the back of an innocent animal And that the press is giving free advertisement to this breeder and promoting breeding while millions die in shelters every year. Breeders/Puppymills/Petstores nationwide make $millions$ and most do not pay INCOME TAX or charge SALES TAX. The IRS needs to investigate this. States need to regulate these individuals. Most mills have 250 dogs that stay in cages and do nothing but make puppies that sell for $500 each. 2 pregnancies per year each. Do the math. Please spay and neuter and don’t buy while millions die. Find your “real rescue” pet at http://www.petfinder.com.

  5. I haven’t trusted Obama to do the right thing since I uncovered his hatred for animals last year:

  6. Dalmatians are NOT American…they are from Dalmatia which is near Croatia and they were developed to run with the carriages…26 miles a day with the horses…because of their coloring they showed up well at night.

I agree it would have really made a statement for homeless dogs had he rescued one…as Oprah is now doings.

    People need to be educated.

  7. Thank you Carol. I’m devastated now. Why don’t fire houses use American dogs?

  8. I am devastated… Someone thinks Obama hates dogs because he voted for animal protection laws!!! He supported measures, to allow the creation of pet trusts to provide for the long-term care of companion animals; to upgrade the penalties for cruelty to animals; to require psychological counseling for people who abuse animals; to require that veterinarians report suspected acts of cruelty and animal fighting; and to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption.

Someone has to educate and protect the ignorant. Having 3 dogs in one cage is too crowded! The lady “never hit them dogs much neither. If they were barking or misbehaving we’d just talk to them real gentle (yeah right) and not give them no food,” How humane is that? Think they might be barking because they were dogs or they were hungry? That lady Jan is a moron. I guarantee you, she doesn’t have a 3rd grade education. I am grateful someone like Obama has enough of a heart to protect the animals from idiots like her. That makes me want to toss me cookies. That picture is morbid.

The reason Dalmatians initially were used in fire departments is 12% of them are deaf and the sirens did not bother them.

  9. I would not feel comfortable having a handicapped immigrant dog attempting to rescue me. I’m sorry, that’s just how I feel. As far as animal protection laws, don’t they violate that whole Darwin thing that liberals support over creationism?

  10. I am sooooooo sick of people having ridiculous expectations on President Obama. Seriously, when W. Bush took office, he wasn’t nearly as scrutinized as Obama. Good gracious, it’s a friggin dog not a massive political bowel movement. GET OVER IT already people!
