Ron Paul and I Have a Plan to Stop Pirates

with one comment

[For those of you awaiting my response to the Texas situation, it will be forthcoming this weekend.]

Ron Paul isn’t taking this whole pirate thing lying down.  He joins a  growing number of national security experts are calling on Congress to consider using letters of marque and reprisal, a power written into the Constitution that allows the United States to hire private citizens to keep international waters safe.  In exchange for bounty money, anybody with a letter of marque would be able to protect shipping from pirates.

“I think if every potential pirate knew this would be the case, they would have second thoughts because they could probably be blown out of the water rather easily if those were the conditions,” Paul said.

It occurred to me that we could do this free market solution one better.  Most major league baseball teams now have a fantasy camp where insurance agents, veterinarians, and anybody who can afford the steep fee can live out their major league dreams by playing with professional coaches and competing against many of their childhood baseball heroes.

Anybody who saw the hilarious City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly’s Gold knows about the adventure trips where adults can do a cattle drive and live out their cowboy fantasies.  There are all sorts of adventurous opportunities like this for aging baby boomers who never got to have their dream job.  Well, if they can do it for cowboys, why not pirates?   Who didn’t play pirates as a kid?  Wouldn’t it be great to do it as an adult?

My proposal is to build a handful of replica 17th century pirate ships.  The people who built the Black Pearl for Pirates of the Caribbean could do the job for sure.   The United States government could then hold the first ever fantasy camp for pirates (The Pittsburgh Pirates don’t count).  We would then charge people to go hunt down the pirates off the coast of Somalia.   Even better would be if we could get a network to film it as a reality show.   Too many people are viewing this pirates as a menace instead of as an opportunity.  The US could make some serious green off of this situation instead of wasting money on our own navy.

  1. Nate, I await your analysis of the Texas situation. I know it will be fair and balanced. As you do your investigative reporting, could you find out for me if I will need a US passport to enter Texas in July? Also, where can I exchange my US dollars for Texos?
