TSA Nominee Withdraws

Yesterday, everybody heard about Scott Brown’s exciting victory for the Republicans, but the GOP had another victory as well.   Obama’s nomination to lead the Transportation Security Administration Erroll Southers was forced to remove his name from competition, citing danger to the country from not having a TSA director–yeah right. The only danger I see is political cowardice.  I don’t even know what the TSA Director does?  Make sure drunks aren’t exposing themselves on the bus?

The hero in this situation is Jim DeMint (R-SC) who has blocked Southers from being confirmed for nearly a year.   De Mint’s main objective was to prevent TSA workers from joining a labor union.  I applaud DeMint for this–I see no reason why the people who spend all day looking at an endless parade of X-Rays should be able to bargain for shorter work hours or more frequent rest breaks.   To me, this seems like a relatively simple job and the people doing it don’t even have to wear hairnets.  It isn’t like there’s anything to be gained by having qualified and talented people drawn to higher salaries and better conditions providing our airport security rather than people who couldn’t get on the midnight shift at Wendys.  I’m sure that Obama’s next nominee will put a stop to this silliness.
