Bachmann’s Census Strategy is Shortsighted

with 4 comments

Many of my conservative friends are telling their friends not to fill out the census form this year.   I am against the census as much as the next person.   Doesn’t it seem like we just had one with the new millennium?  It seems like a totally unnecessary waste of money that the government wouldn’t be participating in unless they were using that information in some nefarious way.   Even the usually sensible Michele Bachmann told the Washington Times today thather family will only be indicating the number of people in the household, because “the Constitution doesn’t require any information beyond that.”

The problem with Bachmann’s strategy is two-fold.  First, is the legal issue.  According to the Census Bureau anyone over the age of 18 must fill out all the questions and any such person who refuses to answer “any of the questions” faces a $5,000 fine.  Now, we all know that Representative Bachmann is right and will prevail in court, but I hate to think of conservatives of modest means risking serious punishment before it gets worked out.

The other problem with Bachmann’s strategy is that it is shortsighted.   You see, the census is used to reapportion the electoral map, which is critical to us taking back the White House in 2012 and holding it until the next census in 2020.   I am no scholar on Census law, but I believe that while it is illegal to not fill it out, there is absolutely nothing that says it must be filled out accurately.  Instead of conservatives not filling out the census and watching California get 75 electoral votes and DC getting 10, I think it’s too our advantage to fill out the census, but to triple the number of people living in our households.

Think how great it could be to have a solidly Republican South, but with triple the electoral votes.  With immigration continuing to rise, there are now over 100 million people living in the United States and frankly only a little nudge in the statistical department will get conservatives the representation they deserve.  I can’t wait to see Obama’s face when he sees how many conservatives filled out his census.

  1. Nate, you socialist, you! Conservatives should refuse to fill it out if they’re true to their values about not letting the government into their lives except for the bedroom. Huge conservative swaths of this country should register their digust with this intrusion by sending back nothing at all.

I thought you were my token conservative, but here you reveal yourself as a Marxist-Leninist or maybe even a Maoist. Are you a closet Maoist, Nate?

  2. I just think we can keep the government out of our bedroom by giving them too much information just as easily as we can by giving them no information.
