Giant Oil Spill Threatens New Orleans – Should We Care?

with 16 comments

Anybody who has recently seen the HBO series Treme, can tell you that New Orleans is a city with a vibrant cultural heritage.   I tried to watch it myself, but when one of the characters played by Steve Zahn held Professor Longhair as being greater than Jesus, I found I could not take anymore.   Still, New Orleans is where food like Popeye’s Chicken and red beans and rice comes from as well as the musical art form frequently called Dixieland Jazz.  When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on 2005, it was wisely decided to rebuild and while New Orleans hasn’t been completely fixed, it now boasts a Super Bowl champion.

Now, comes news that a large 5,000 barrel a day oil spill is in the Gulf of Mexico and spreading towards New Orleans.   I for one have had enough.   With our current troubled economy, can we really afford to spend millions of dollars protecting the city’s shoreline?   If New Orleans is ever going to be self-sufficient, the government needs to get out of the way and let private industry clean up the spill.  5,000 barrels of oil a day could be extremely valuable on the open market and we should encourage oil companies to clean up the spill by allowing them to keep any oil they clean up.  I can almost guarantee that BP and American companies would be fighting for the rights to reclaim the oil.

The large question though is the future of New Orleans.   The city was built precariously on the Gulf of Mexico and will forever be vulnerable to oil spills like this.   Only Representative Jack Kimble (R-CA) has had the courage to speak out against rescuing the city saying, “”That doesn’t make sense to me. … And it’s a question that certainly we should ask.”

Kimble continued, “It looks like a lot of that place could be bulldozed anyway.”

Kimble was quickly attacked for his candor, but he certainly brings up a good question and if you read the whole interview instead of taking quotes out of context you reallize that what Kimble is speaking of is New Orleans’ terrible location so close to oil drilling.  Former Dartmouth English professor E.Y. Hansen told the Heritage Valley Times-Gazette this week, “”New Orleans naturally wants to be an oil slick.  A city should never have been built there in the first place.”

As long as New Orleans is located so close to so much oil production, it will forever be in peril.  It’d be wonderful if we could just ignore the facts, but we can’t.   This will not be the last oil spill to impact the city.  We have to ask ourselves, is this the last oil spill we will pay to clean up or will we just keep bailing out New Orleans?

Celebrating Charter Schools Week

leave a comment »

I have to admit, despite being a socialist, a communist, and a fascist sometimes President Obama comes up with a great idea.   Such an idea is Charter Schools week which will be observed this year between May 2nd and May 8th this year.   There will be no such day for ordinary public school students, but you know what they say about membership having its privileges.   I have been a big advocate of charter schools for some time now.  As President Obama said, “a world class education is our best avenue to prosperity.”

From Dennis Bakke at Imagine Schools to Green Dot’s Steve Barr to Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, these edu-preneurs have managed to use their charter schools to put them well on the road to prosperity.   Without pesky unions and local oversight, charters offer the savvy investor myriad opportunities to make a quick buck.  Why else would so many hedge fund managers and movers and shakers like Goldman-Sachs be so involved in the charter school movement.

While ordinary public schools will not be getting their own week, there will be several other important education weeks this Spring:

Dehumanizing Wealthy Schools Week – From Veronica Mars to Glee to the films of John Hughes, these schools provide us with one of our greatest resources — teen angst.   Sometimes when fitting in is impossible, you’ve just got to break all the rules. May 11-May 17

Tough Urban School with Only One Competent Adult – Whether it’s Lean on Me, Stand and Deliver, or Freedom Writers you better find that one adult.  While other teachers show up drunk and sleep through class, there is that one adult who cares and will tutor students in his/her own until 1AM.  May 18-24

Rural/Suburban School with a Cool Outsider – The White House will celebrate those schools where everything seemed boring until that one stranger moved in.   Maybe that stranger is the Fonz or maybe he just wants to dance in a town that’s forgotten how to party, but one thing’s for sure school will never be the same.  May 25- June 1.

My Newest Book Deal

leave a comment »

I am thrilled to report that I have just finished negotiations with the local Blockbuster on a brand new book deal.   This will be my second book jacket and I am thrilled.   Unlike my first book jacket  Lockdown: The Liberal Agenda to Bankrupt the Self-Storage Industry and Turn America into a Third Word Country, this jacket is a work of pure fiction.  However, I am very convinced that the horrible events in this story are indeed quite possible.   This book jacket will be available in both hard cover and a new paper back size as well.  If you are only going to buy one book this year and only one book jacket for that book then by all means make it this one.   This book jacket also introduces the character of Jack Beck who is too self-storage owner-operators what Indiana Jones was to archaeologists.   I promise you, after this jacket you will never look at corrugated cardboard the same again.

Boycott America: The Story of Us

with 37 comments

I was very excited to see another alternative in the wasteland that is Sunday night television.  Sure the Pacific is great, but HBO follows it with Treme, which for a story of New Orleans seems very much obsessed with New Orleans music to the point of ignoring all that looting that went on post Katrina and I am sure still goes on today.  When the History Channel began running commercials for America: The Story of Us, I was understandably excited.   There is no country whose story I would rather hear about than our own and there is none that would make for more gripping television.

I did of course have to check this afternoon to make sure this wasn’t some liberal propaganda that would show the United States to be the greatest evil on the planet.  I did a quick google search and was shocked and appalled to find out that this movie was nothing more than liberal claptrap directed by liberal nut job Rob Reiner and stars fellow liberals Michelle Pfeiffer and Bruce Willis.   Perhaps, what I found most offensive was that Reiner was going to tell the story of America not from the eyes of a veteran of Valley Forge, but from a self-indulgent couple going through a divorce.

For a cable channel billing themselves as the History Channel, they should know that divorce wasn’t even legal through most of our country’s history.  I believe my daughter would be far happier today if that ruling still was in effect and her cow of a mother couldn’t legally divorce me just to shack up with her personal trainer, but I digress.

I have heard that some things like the visual effects of the musket fire in slow motion were interesting, but no clever visuals can distract from liberal Reiner’s attempt to view America through the eyes of a modern day couple instead of from our founding fathers who would not have put up with our current socialist government.  I am calling on you gentle readers to boycott this trash.   This is not the America I love so well.

Congressmen Explain How to Spot Illegals

with 3 comments

With the threat to the country growing from illegal aliens, it is our patriotic duty to be on the lookout for illegals.  Of course, with some 12,000,000 illegal aliens hiding in this country, they have obviously gotten quite good at avoiding detection.  California has had one of the biggest problems with illegal Mexican immigrations since joining the United States.   This unique problem has led  California Congressmen Brian Bilbray and Jack Kimble to study the problem. Together, they offer very easy tips for spotting illegal aliens.

Bilbray relies on clothing as a dead giveaway, “look at the kind of dress you wear, there’s different types of attire, there’s different type of…right down to the shoes, right down to the clothes. But mostly by behavior it’s mostly behavior, just as the law enforcement people here in Washington, DC does it based on certain criminal activity there is behavior things that professionals are trained in across the board and this group shouldn’t be exempt from those observations as much as anybody else.”

Kimble agrees saying, “Oh yes, there are certain behaviors you can’t miss.  If there is a cactus or a shady tree, they will you know I mean a lot of times they’ll take naps there.   The other thing about illegal aliens as Congressman Bilbray pointed out is their clothing.   I have gotten quite good at detecting illegals from their clothing. The key is looking for sombreros and luchador masks.  Those are dead give aways.”

Bilbray and Kimble both agreed that accents could be misleading.  “Sometimes they’ll adopt a fake British accent that will completely fool you,” said Kimble, “They’re good.  They’re Dick Van Dyke good.”

For us average citizens, the key is keeping an eye open.  Illegal immigrants are everywhere in this country and we need to keep a vigilant eye at all times.  Hopefully, with helpful tips like these, we can win the war on illegal immigration

Woman Who Won’t Eat Bacon Blocked from Foster Parenting

with 4 comments

For all of you who believe that life without bacon has no meaning you have a friend in Maryland.  Contemporary Family Services, a Maryland-based private foster agency authorized by the state to place children with foster parents has rejected the application of former foster child Tashima Crudup.  Ms. Crudup was a former foster child herself who wanted to be a foster parent because having been a foster child herself she wanted to give back.

Unfortunately, Ms. Crudup is a Muslim.  Now neither CFS nor myself have any problem with Ms. Crudup’s religion no matter that it damns her to eternal damnation in the afterlife.  What CFS has a problem with is that as a Muslim Ms. Crudup does not eat pork.   Contemporary Family Services does not want to put a child into that environment where he will miss out on the simple joys of childhood like a hotdog at the ballpark, bacon as part of a complete breakfast, or a bacon double cheeseburger served on a Krispy Kreme at a State Fair.

Some misguided politically correct fools will certainly consider this prejudice, but I would feel the same way if Ms. Crudup were a vegetarian or a Jew.  Now, In defense of Ms. Crudup she has promised to raise any children who were placed with her in their own religious tradition.  However, she never promised to let them eat pork.

So many of my favorite childhood memories are tied up with pork and I would never want to deny any child those same experiences.  But is pork good for children? Absolutely.  Today’s pork is leaner than ever and it’s got the nutrient punch that your child needs for hours of video games or just sitting back and watching tv.

Lone Gunmen March on Virginia to Say, “We’re Not Alone”

leave a comment »

Will we surrender the rights that old-timey people like this fought so hard to defend?

It was like Martin Luther King’s famous March on Washington, but with guns.  Literally dozens of conservative second amendment activists marched in Virginia where open carry  is legal to let the government in Washington, DC know that they would not be ignored.   Said protester Robert  Cooper, “A lot of the time people think of us as quiet types who keep to ourselves, but that’s not true.  I’m on the HAM Radio most every night and I know some of these guys have wi-fi in their bomb shelters.  It’s time we stand together and be counted.”

“We’re in a war. The other side knows they are at war, because they started it,” said Larry Pratt, president of the Gun Owners of America. “They are coming for our freedom, for our money, for our kids, for our property. They are coming for everything because they are a bunch of socialists.”

Rep. Paul Broun, R-Georgia, said “we must declare war against oppression and against socialism, and you are the people to do that” adding that he was in no way advocating violence and it was merely a coincidence that the rally was held on the anniversary of Timothy McVeigh’s attack on the Federal Building in Oklahoma City.

Rally members were naturally on edge that any moment martial law could be declared and they could have their guns confiscated and be put in detention caps.  One thing’s for sure, those socialist baby stealers will think twice about messing with these brave patriots whether they drink their own urine or not.
