Pope Grants Special Dispensation to Abuse Victims

with 6 comments

What began as an American problem soon spread to Ireland, Europe, and ultimately to the Vatican itself.    The Catholic Church has been rocked by a decades long scandal of child sexual abuse by its priests.  That scandal has spread to Catholic Bishops who transferred known abusers in order to keep their transgressions quiet and ultimately to the Pope himself. “The focus now is on Benedict,” the U.S.-based National Catholic Reporter wrote Friday in a strongly worded editorial on the scandal. “What did he know? When did he know it? How did he act once he knew?”

Most disturbing are recent allegations against Pope Benedict that as archbishop of Munich, he approved the transfer of an abusive priest from another jurisdiction, and that later, as the church’s top doctrinal official, he was in a position to know about a Wisconsin case in which the church failed to defrock a child-molesting priest.  According to the Vatican Enquirer, “since the latest allegations have swept Europe, the church finds itself with a public relations nightmare that has escalated into a financial crisis.  The take at the shrines in Italy is down and that is not an aberration.”

Seeking to reach out to the victims of abuse, the Vatican announced that “beginning with Good Friday all victims of priest sexual abuse would be granted special dispensation to eat meat on Fridays during lent for the next 7 years. ”

This dispensation is startling in its break with centuries of Catholic tradition.  According to Bishop Giovanni Alboreto of the Vatican, “The Pope wanted to find a way to reach out to the victims of this awful tragedy in some small way without admitting culpability.   Originally, several bishops suggested forgiving between five and ten venial sins, but that opens up a whole can of worms.  This seemed like a more elegant solution. I think everybody enjoys well-cooked meat.”

According to the Vatican Enquirer, the dispensation from refraining from meat during Fridays and Ash Wednesday during lent is almost never given by the Pope.   Although, local bishops have the authority and do use it on those rare occasions when Saint Patrick’s Day falls on a Friday.   The gesture, which was generally applauded as a move towards reconciliation and forgiveness without conceding fault, was less well received by several of the victims.   One young man said, “I appreciate the gesture, but I really don’t pay much attention to the church anyway.”

Another victim was more receptive saying, “Sure, I would have liked an apology.  Still, it’s getting warm out and I’d love to cook up some steaks on the grill on Friday.”

There was no response from American bishops who are still preoccupied with the fight against health care.  Bishop Aquila of Fargo said it was “truly tragic” that some “so-called ‘Catholic’ groups” came out in support of the legislation.  These groups, Bishop Aquila stressed, acted “in direct contradiction to the bishops” who are the “guardians” of authentic Christian teaching.

  1. God never instructed his disciples to refrain from eating meat on Fridays, when he was alive as a man on the earth. It is a man-made religious activity, used to keep people in bondage to this church.

He thinks that he stands in the place of Christ, and so he considers that he has the right both to insist on the abstaining from meat as well as the eating of meat for a few on a Friday.

The third person of God is the Vicar of Christ. He is the Holy Spirit and he never, never adds to Christ’s teaching. Not eating meat on Friday is an addition to what God in Christ instructed.

Therefore, someone who is against Christ, that is an anti-Christ, determines for age after age that some of the religious people of Christianity should abstain from eating meat on a Friday. And then contradicts this by allowing some to eat this meat on this day.

Why? To curry favour with the rest of us! All so human! All so unGodly! All so Christ-despising!

  2. I’m sorry, but I can’t believe the Pope is the anti-Christ. What would that make Obama then?

  3. thatsrightnate, I can understand your distress at any suggestion that the Pope is THE anti-Christ. He’s not and I agree with you.

However, I said that “someone who is against Christ is AN anti-Christ”. So, anyone can be anti-Christ, that is “against” Christ.

I consider that a pope, any pope, is against Christ because he sets himself up as Christ on earth and as the Vicar of Christ, when only the Holy Spirit can be the Vicar of Christ.

In that the pope does this against the divine Person of Christ, then he is against Christ and is one, among many, very many, who are, in fact, anti-Christ.

Hope you can follow this even if you don’t agree with it!

  4. OK, I think I’m following your argument. So it’s still possible that Obama is the anti-Christ?

  5. No, thatsrightnate, Obama is not the anti-Christ, although I take your point that at some time someone, just one individual, is going to be THE single Anti-Christ.

Obama could not be THE anti-Christ because his office is a secular office, and it is an old office having been occupied by many others in the past.

When THE anti-Christ comes, my assumption is that he will be so obviously anti-Christ that there will be no doubt about what he is doing there.

Firstly, he won’t be in a secular office of government; secondly, it will be a new post or office unlike the popes, whose office goes back centuries.

Thirdly, there will have to be world government in existence so that he can govern the whole world AS IF HE WAS Jesus Christ.

Fourthly, human beings will need to be much more religious than they are now, Christianity will need to be much more dominant over secularism, atheism, islame etc than now.

Fifthly, the office of THE anti-Christ will need to be a totally new post or position, which has never been occupied by anyone else in the past, such as previous POTUS and popes.

I think we’re a long way off the appearance of THE anti-Christ because Christianity is so weak currently. However, there are many anti-Christs in existence, such as the pope, at the present time.

  6. Hi John,
You are an amazing guy that you can read the thoughts of God and be pretty sure when the Anti-Chriat is or is not coming. We need you as President and leader of the world, seeing as you are so knowledgeable!
